Here we discuss the various aspects of Internet Marketing as it applies to the design of web sites, what it is, why you should be actively engaged in it and some tips on how you might be able to go about developing and implementing your own internet marketing strategy when designing your website.
Whilst Outlook does provide mail list facilities this should not be confused with this as being an e-mail marketing platform. The reason being, your ISP (your internet service provider) will have SMTP limits set defining how many and how often e-mails can be sent from your mailbox. If you exceed this limit all further emails will be blocked from sending from your mailbox. (check this article for more in-depth explanation)
You also run the risk, it using your outlook service for bulk e-mail distribution, of being blacklisted as a spammer. There are services on the Internet constantly monitoring mail tracked looking for possible spammers and by using Outlook two regularly send large volume mail out campaigns puts you in the firing line.
Even more concerning is that the likelihood of being blacklisted is increased if you include attachments and/or embed images within your e-mail.
Be warned – if you do get blacklisted, the process of getting yourself removed is not simple and straightforward. Worse still, you may not even realise you have been blacklisted.
The safest way for conducting any e-mail marketing is to use one of the reputable service providers such as MailChimp, iContact or Aweber. There are many others you can choose from but these would probably be the most widely known and commonly used dedicated e-mail marketing solutions.
Another alternative, which is even better, is to use platforms such as we do with our clients when the e-mail marketing is integrated within your website CMS. Both Business Catalyst and 60SECONDS offer this which is not only more cost-effective that provides you with a far better overall Web solution for your business.
So why should you use a commercial e-mail marketing service provider? Quite simply, they are set up to protect you from being blacklisted. These systems are designed to also more efficiently distribute e-mails are not embedding images that rather inserting links to where the image can be downloaded from. They are regularly monitored pickup inadvertent black listings as well.
Commercial e-mail marketing services also are designed to offer relatively simple interfaces enabling users to:
- create e-mail campaigns from provided customised templates
- ensure your campaigns complied with the anti-spam legislation
- manage subscriptions through built-in facilities allow for the simple addition and removal of subscribers to your mail lists
- have access to a range of tools that otherwise manage your lists identifying bad e-mail addresses and automatic removal of dead mailboxes
- most importantly, track statistics on who is opening your e-mails and clicking on embedded links
the anti-spam legislation has some very specific rules around management of subscription list and what must be included in your e-mails. Failure to comply can lead to stiff penalties being placed upon it.
