With Google’s announcement that it will include “mobile friendliness” as a ranking factor, website owners now have to seriously consider upgrading their website to a mobile friendly platform. To determine if your site is mobile friendly, use Google’s Mobile Usability Assessment tool. For the vast majority of website owners, upgrading to a mobile friendly version of your site means redesigning your website with responsive layouts underpinning the presentation of all your content. Subject to the type and amount of content displayed in your pages, the current underlying page structure layouts and the quality of the web code, the task of conversion can be more complex with some sites than others. Remember, you are trying to show all the page content that has been designed for say a 21” screen to now display neatly on an iPhone or similar smartphone device. Sometimes it just doesn’t work and some major rethinking on the user interface is required.
Other factors that are considered in redesigning your site is what platform the site was built on and whether themes or templates were used. In the case of many CMS platforms such as Business Catalyst we use HTML templates and layouts that make the job of upgrading a design far easier than it might otherwise be. For those with Wordpress, y will invariably be using a commercial theme which may have an upgrade available that provides responsive layouts. Understanding the platform on which your website was built pays heavily in considering the upgrade options you have open to you.
Some websites simply are old enough to not be following design practices that easily lend themselves to converting to responsive designs and the only option is to redesign from scratch. Invariably it is easier to rebuild the designs , as either a close match to the existing designs or as a completely new fresh look design, from scratch rather than retrofitting code into an existing site.
Of course there is also the issue that you simply have a bad design in place and making this responsive will not resolve some inherent problems that are impeding your digital success with converting visitors to business opportunities. After all why would you want to spend money on something that simply still suffers from a range of issues that prevent your website achieving any real results irrespective of whether it is responsive or not.
Lastly you need to consider the general state of your site. What we have found, particularly with some older sites is that they suffer from a range of issues that fall under the realm of poor coding standards, user interface design or bad SEO factors existing or lack of SEO initiatives being in place. We therefore strongly suggest that before you rush in upgrading your website design to a responsive layout be it maintaining your current design look and feel or with a totally new design, you review your site identifying any aspects that might be reducing your chances of attracting new visitors and converting them to business opportunities. Such aspects that you should consider might include:
Much of this analysis and investigation into what can be done is time consuming and beyond most website owners.
